about

I’ve always been a night owl. That’s kind of how this whole thing happened. I would never have figured out how to make music like this if I didn’t regularly get the impulse to pick up the bass and start playing at 4am. To not wake my flat-mates, neighbours or family (or at music school to avoid drawing the attention of the campus security guard after closing hours) I spent a lot of time playing the bass while barely making a sound. That’s how I discovered the magical place where sound and silence meet.

Strange yet wonderful things happen at extremely low dynamic levels. Notes never really come into full form and almost seem to fall apart as the resonances split off into overtones and subtones. One can begin to hear the raw materials that sound is made of.

This strange place between sound and silence is where most of the ideas on this album were born. There are layers built into these sounds. There are notes behind the notes… tones under the tones. This characteristic of these sounds revealed the potential of a multi-layered music that could be played alone by one person. So I expanded the ideas out from there… attempting to use the full dynamic and spectral range of the bass and to use some creative amplification to bring these other-worldly sounds forward and give them their own space. Then I started adding more layers by singing and hitting a drum every now and then.

The layers in this music are not made by using loops and overdubs. It all happens live and in real time by one person attempting to split the sound of the bass apart.

More To Give is the exception to this because sometimes you gotta get by with a little help from your friends.
